Why Shel Silverstein Will Change Your Life
Willow Munson, Junior
Shel Silverstein is a very well known poetry writer who writes quirky poems for young children to enjoy. These poems cultivate kids imagination while keeping the children engaged through his lighthearted tone and rhyming sentences. If you are unfamiliar with Shel Silverstein's work take a look at his arguably most well poem, “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”
At first glance this poem may seem silly and simply written for the purpose of entertainment but it's purpose is much deeper. Silverstein makes the point that teens and adults have lost certain perspectives of the world. He believes that children live in a world of joy and imagination while everyone else only sees hardship. Taking a step back and take on the point of view of a child will allow adults to see the joys that their life has to offer because only the children know where the sidewalk ends. You should take a moment to look beyond the stress of school and work, the darkness of today's politics, and suffering that is happening all over the world to realize that life is beautiful when you let joy and imagination into your heart.
