Braided Hair, Don't Care: The Art of the Fishtail Bun

When it comes to doing my hair, I take the lazy route. As I grow older, I'm becoming less and less interested in investing time in what I like to call "the lion’s mane that grows on my head."

Braids and buns are the best ways to finish your hairdo in a matter of minutes, while still ending up looking like an approachable person. This fishtail braided bun is a quick look that still looks polished and intricate. I hope it’s helpful to you on those mornings where you spill cereal all down your shirt and can’t find your left shoe.

For this bun you’ll need: hair, 3 hair ties (1 regular + 2 small clear ones), and bobby pins.

  1. So start out with your nasty, second-day hair (or third, or fourth…).

  2. Tie your hair up into a high ponytail.

  3. Separate the ponytail into two sections.

  4. Create a fishtail braid out of each section.

    • How to fishtail: Separate hair into two sections. Take a small piece of hair out of one section and cross it over to the opposite section. Take another piece from the same section you just added to and cross it over to the opposite section. Repeat until you reach the bottom of your hair (obvs).

  5. Now that you have two fishtail braids, wrap them around the base of the ponytail.

  6. Pin the braids into place. That’s it. Really.
